Palpitation
WHAT ARE PALPITATIONS? |

Heart Palpitations are simply an awareness of one’s heartbeat. This could be felt as |
|
- a forceful heartbeat, but not fast
- a rapid heartbeat
- an irregular heartbeat, or
- a skipped beat / dropped beat
|

WHAT IS THE CAUSE? |
|
They could be due to |
|
- ectopics
- supraventricular tachycardia
- ventricular tachycardia
- atrial fibrillation
- high blood pressure
|
ECTOPICS |
|
These are isolated irregular beats. They can originate from the upper chamber (atria) or lower chamber (ventricle). They can occur in normal hearts or diseased hearts. |
|
When all other tests show that the structure and function of the heart is normal, these are benign and do not need further treatment. |
|
If other tests show that the heart is enlarged or weak in function, then these are signs that the person is at risk of sudden cardiac death or cardiac arrest. |
